Save the date – 2023 SubletSeries CO-OP @ HERE!

Mark your calendars as BodyStories is excited to announce that we will be performing at the HERE Arts Centre as a part of their SubletSeries: Co-Op program! We will be premiering a new work, Inside Out, an evening-length dance work that explores personal identity and healing from trauma.

In 2022, the U.S. saw a marked increase in identity-based violence related to gender and sexual orientation. As a female-presenting, queer, non-binary artist, I am highly alert to the pains experienced by female-identifying and LGBTQIAP+ communities from the increased instances of identity-based violence related to gender and sexual orientation. As a company, we are focused on building a community that provides a safe space for all marginalized communities to express themselves, particularly LGBTQIAP+,  Inside/Out explores the complex, individualized journeys of navigating this societal trauma. It illustrates the power of the self against these discriminatory actions, while also articulating the ways in which our identities are forever altered as a result. Our dynamic choreography moves the audience through these journeys through intricate movement phrases. The piece moves through phases of calm and chaos, culminating in a sense of breath, power, and vitality. The work will focus on uplifting and affirming womxn, individuals with a uterus, and members of the LGBTQIAP+ community. The work is choreographed by Teresa Fellion with 2 sections by collaborator Eddie Stockton. It features dancers Leann Gioia, Eddie Stockton, Teresa Fellion, and Arianna Stendardo.

Skimming the Surface: Expressive Movement Workshops

Get excited… Valerie Green is coming to MAR+RC in April!!

Skimming the Surface: Expressive Movement Workshops will be taught by Valerie on April 22nd-23rd. These workshops will help participants release blocked energy causing stress or discomfort in one’s life, and are designed to integrate movement, feelings, and emotions. Our time together will feature gentle expressive movement exercises leading participants on their own personal movement journey within a nurturing and safe group environment. When using the language of movement rather than words, a different kind of image or emotion may arise, words label what we know, expressive movement reveals the unknown. Repressed emotions can shut down the immune system causing pain and illness. This workshop aims to find a physical expression to the feelings, whereby a healing process can begin, and will help you find grounding in inhabiting the power of your own presence.

Along with the workshops, there will be a Community Connection Pot Luck Lunch where participants will get a chance to relax, unwind, and build community while eating yummy food together!

There will also be a showing of  “Time Capsule – A Physical Documentary”, which is a dance film, directed and choreographed by Green, eight solos physically trace emotional experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic, against a backdrop of iconic NYC landscapes. A dynamic interplay of beauty, strength, and resilience, & “Time Capsule” is a testament to the faith we have in our City, its vast infrastructure, the delicate spirits that inhabit it, and the tender terrains we all hold within.

LEIMAY Fellowship Virtual Performance

We are very excited to announce that as part of the LEIMAY Arts in the Community Garden Commissioning Fellowship Program, we will be premiering a new dance film on October 22nd, 2020 of our work in progress! This work in progress has its roots in the foundational work reeling→healing, which investigates the frustration and helplessness occurring as a result of misled policies and hatred infecting our country today. This work in progress, Healing Currently Downloading, will act as a brand new sequel or second chapter to reeling. While reeling sought to capture the frustration and raw emotion of today’s world, this piece yearns for a resolution to these emotions through purposeful motion, emotion, and action. With dramatic shifts in attitude and form, this work offers audience members a chance to question whether its open-ended conclusion will permit a resolution to the frustration.
Teresa’s work breeds tension below the surface, then propels forward. Instead of focusing on raw emotion, however, we want to search for a solution, or at the very least, a resolution, to our frustration remembering that action and mobilization are instrumental. She began the creative process by designing a work to be performed in the Dorothy Strelsin Memorial Community Garden (LES). We are inspired by the profound impact that this garden has on community-building and encouraging shared space, and plan to continue drawing on these principles as she creates movement patterns and interactions for the dancers. We believe there is no better time than now to create this work. This subject matter, although emotionally heavy, must be experienced and contemplated by anyone affected by today’s political climate. reeling→healing’s ability to connect with audience members has been proven, with audience members commenting on how well the piece provokes thought, inspires, and brings communities together with diverse audiences, and our new work will be following a new parallel path with audiences. Since we are currently creating virtually, this in process showing will be sharing movements that we are developing to later perform in the park in this project. There will be a live Q&A with the artists afterwards.
Stay tuned on our events page and social media for more announcements about this very special virtual performance.

We come back to learn and create some choreography, and end the day taking what we’ve learned and making a dance music video based off of it!

The Virtual Dance Experience Summer Intensive

An intensive for pre-professional and professional dancers (ages 17+). The BodyStories Summer Intensive continues our mission to unleash creativity and empowerment in dancers, now in the virtual world! Dancers will rediscover joy in movement, break through self-imposed mental barriers, find the humor in the body, and develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between art and activism.

Classes will be held from 12-5PM EST each day. Every day will start with a group check-in, to see where we’re at emotionally, physically, and mentally for the day, followed by a yoga flow and dance warm-up. We will have a technique class to refresh our foundations in dance and challenge ourselves with new approaches to movement, and then break at noon for an hour long lunch. We come back for an improvisation and choreography class in the afternoon which is led by Teresa Fellion for movement and writing, Cecly Placenti will join us for some of our writing portions as well, and John Yannelli and Muriel Louveau will join us for musical collaborations. In these classes, we will also discuss the current social climate and reflect on work that needs to be done to reshape and move forward. Participants will journal thoughts and abstract ideas from what they’ve written as inspiration for movement. Together, we will discover the physical language for deeper emotions from these writings, and they will be partnered with music explorations. Each day ends with some breathing and stretching exercises and group reflection to cool down, digesting of the day and looking forward to the next one.

This performance will feature the NYC premiere of the beloved Bodystories piece The Warm-Up as well as the world premiere of reeling→ healing. The Warm-Up (originally performed at Southampton Arts Center with support from NY Community Trust) explores the role of dance as both exercise and art and showcases original music by John Yannelli and Glenn Alexander. reeling → healing is a new piece investigating the frustration and helplessness that can occur as a result of the constant barrage of misled policies and hatred infecting our country. Original music by Kevin Keller and costumes by Nina Katan add to the sense of urgency and need for community, working in tandem with the choreography to immerse the audience in a fully-formed world. As an intimate community, the performers and audience find a way to connect via “The Emotional Architecture of a Bridge,” an original concept drawn and created by Teresa Fellion that involves audience interaction.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

The Warm-Up is a satirically active, fun, and thought-provoking piece that investigates the intersection of dance and exercise. Agawam, where connectivity, fast footwork, and complex partnering examine sensibilities behind work ethic and familial bonds of post-depression-era, working-class Italian-American immigrant families. Translation of some ethos, social practices, memories, and energetic currents into movement asks, “How do ‘borrowed’ threads of cultural crossover move us? HOME draws upon ritualistic process to elucidate one’s search for home via encounters, communication, and understanding of oneself and others. Through movement ranging between off-centered to centered, syncopated to calm, the audience follows this stormed, yet intriguing journey that many undertake in creating a home for themselves.

In conjunction with these performances, Southampton Arts Center will be offering a DANCE CAMP with BodyStories.

Through deep senses of connection, fast footwork, and complex partnering sequences, Agawam
